Engineer in plastics technology

The job profile of a plastics technology engineer is extremely diverse. In addition to all areas of the plastics industry, he/she also works in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction and automotive engineering, both in Germany and abroad. Her/his qualifications cover the areas of development, production and sales. In addition to technical competence, he/she has also acquired market competence and social skills.

Plastics technology plays a major role in many branches of industry today, meaning that the field of work of plastics technology engineers is very broad. The tasks not only relate to the processing and machining of plastics to suit the material, but also to the handling of plastic raw materials and semi-finished products. The evaluation of the properties of plastic raw materials and plastic products and their use is also part of the job. The planning, design and manufacture of production machines and testing equipment are also part of the remit of plastics technology engineers.

During training, particular emphasis is placed on taking into account all aspects of future professional life and reflecting these in the curriculum:

  • Production
Production engineers are responsible for the production process. This includes process planning and organization, setting deadlines, calculating production costs and, of course, managing production.
  • Sales
Sales engineers are responsible for the contact between product manufacture and the end user or between the machine manufacturer and the processor, as well as for advising customers.
  • Social skills
(ability to work in a team, leadership skills, customer-supplier relationship, independence, ability to deal with conflict, ability to take criticism)
  • Methodological competence
(problem-solving ability, creativity, information procurement - information society - abstract thinking, transferability)

We train you for this

Plastics engineers from Darmstadt enjoy a high reputation in the industry. Our aim is to be at the forefront and to prepare our students for the high demands of the market. It is not only current rankings that show that we succeed time and again. The plastics engineering courses are based on mechanical engineering and thus differ from courses with a chemical engineering focus.

Over 2000 graduates of this course (and its predecessor) are making good and important contributions to the success of our industry worldwide. Many of them work at high management levels or are entrepreneurs. Most plastics engineers in Germany come from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.

With a Bachelor's degree, you can start your career or decide to continue your studies on one of our Master's courses.
