Overview

We try to bring learning, life and research together.

Research and development are part of excellent teaching. Questions posed by life occupy us in teaching, research and development projects. Research-based and life-related teaching and learning enable scientificity and relevance to application.

Application-oriented research and development within the framework of industrial projects or publicly funded projects ensure practical relevance in our teaching on the one hand, but also a wide range of technology and knowledge transfer to industry and society on the other. We face up to this special responsibility and work very closely with scientific and industrial partners. We have close links with the Fraunhofer Institute LBF, the GSI, the GFTN, other university and research associations and, in particular, many hundreds of industrial companies.

All students in our department are involved in research and development projects as part of their studies or work directly on industry projects. On the Master's degree course, students decide for themselves whether, in addition to integrated research, they want to complete their compulsory elective credits more through research projects or through teaching credits. All graduates provide proof of their ability to work in engineering science through presentations and publications.

In externally funded projects, we create positions for academic staff and qualify young academics, including as part of doctoral projects.

The 3 institutes of the department are the Institute of Polymer Technology Darmstadt (ikd), the Institute of Design and Product Development (ikup) and the Institute of Mechanics and Mechatronics (im²s). There is also the renowned Laboratory for Optical Diagnostic Methods and Renewable Energies (ODEE)

If you have any questions about research at the faculty, please contact the individual professors directly or the heads of the institutes and the Vice Dean of the faculty.
