Road construction technology center
Teaching in the construction and maintenance of roads deals comprehensively with the fundamentals of the construction and production of classified road and path pavements. Starting with the subsoil/substructure, students are introduced to dimensioning and the various construction methods used in the superstructure of road pavements. The focus is on the construction materials and construction material mixtures used in superstructure layers and the associated installation technologies. Essentially, the following teaching content is covered:
- Standardized construction methods in the superstructure of traffic areas
- Binding agents and aggregates
- Asphalt construction methods
- Slab and paving construction methods
- Concrete construction methods
We also deal with innovative asphalt construction methods (e.g. noise reduction, infiltration capacity, temperature reduction) and the reuse of reclaimed asphalt in terms of environmental compatibility and sustainability in asphalt road construction.
In the road construction laboratory, tests are carried out on road construction materials as part of the course and their quality and suitability for the respective application are then assessed. During the course, students are actively involved in the testing of road construction materials. For example, they learn how to design asphalt formulations and which test methods to use to analyze the properties of aggregates, binders, additives and construction material mixtures, as well as how to prepare technical documentation in the form of test reports. In addition, the laboratory offers opportunities to carry out scientific and experimental investigations as part of Bachelor's and Master's theses.
The road construction laboratory has modern equipment for testing bituminous and hydraulically bound as well as unbound construction material mixtures.
The road construction laboratory is equipped with a wide range of testing equipment, including
- Sieve analysis of aggregates
- Raw density of asphalt mix
- Production of asphalt test specimens (Marshall test)
- Laboratory mixer for the production of mastic and rolled asphalt mixes with measurement of workability
- Analysis of asphalt mixtures with extraction and recovery (asphalt analyzer and rotary evaporator)
- Bitumen tests with EP RuK and BPnF
