Why round manhole covers?

For dramaturgical reasons, this question is of course not answered right at the beginning. The far more important question is: "Why are there manhole covers at all?". The answer is trivial. If the cover didn't exist, you could fall into the manhole below, for example. So the key question must rather be: "Why do we need these manholes?"

Underneath the lids are access shafts that lead to the sewers in the underworld, which are rarely as spectacular as in the movie 'The Third Man'. The vast majority of existing sewers (approx. 550,000 kilometers of public sewers in Germany) are circular cross-sections with a diameter of less than 800 millimeters, which therefore do not necessarily invite you to walk through them and play hide-and-seek.

To put it simply, the manholes ensure accessibility for the inspection and cleaning of the sewers and guarantee ventilation to prevent damage and even explosive gas concentrations.

Now that the question of the purpose of the manholes and the need to cover them with manhole covers for safety reasons has been clarified, we can return to the original question. The main reason is hardly worth mentioning from a scientific point of view: as a manhole cover has to withstand the load of larger vehicles, it is very stable and therefore also heavy - usually 50 to 100 kilos. Regardless of the dangers for people working in the sewer, it would be very difficult to remove a cover that has fallen into the manhole.

A round manhole cover, which has a slightly larger diameter than its support ring, cannot possibly be thrown into the manhole, no matter how you twist and turn it. This is not the case with a rectangular cover. Here, the edge length is smaller than the diagonal of the access opening. After a deliberate or accidental turn, it would be possible to throw the cover into the shaft.

Nevertheless, rectangular covers do exist, but these are usually larger installation openings whose covers can usually only be opened with hydraulic support and are firmly connected to the access opening with hinges.
