On September 17, 2024, the time had finally come: the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in cooperation with the Hessian Ministry of Transport (HMWVW) and the Hessian police, hosted the ninth Road Safety Symposium of the Initiative for More Road Safety in Hesse. Inspired by exciting and impressive presentations, around 150 traffic experts from the road construction administration, traffic authorities, police, associations and initiatives met at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences to discuss the topic of road safety from different perspectives. One focus was on real-world laboratories and experimental spaces. There was agreement on the urgent need for improvements. Action plans were presented on how these can be implemented.
Road safety has improved significantly in recent decades. Nevertheless, the number of serious personal injuries is still too high. Of particular concern here is the countervailing and significant increase in accidents involving fatalities and serious injuries in cycling. But we can do something about it! It is time to work towards the goals that Hesse has set itself with its road safety concept. Everyone is called upon to participate and raise awareness in society. Real-world laboratories and experimental spaces offer ideal opportunities here.
The date for the tenth symposium on 16.09.2025 has already been set. The focus will be on "Road safety in renovation and maintenance".
